Measuring broadband
The first access to the internet was via our phone systems. These connections were slow. This was due to modem speeds and land land wire capabilities. As internet connectivity grew in popularity the need for faster speeds became evident. Broadband access was introduced to provide the faster speeds. This was referred to as Broadband internet access and then through usage shortened to just broadband. Today it includes Cable, DSL, Satellite and wireless technologies. Today the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OCED) has defined broadband as having speeds of at least 256 kbits per second in at least one direction.
