Winter Backpacking Tips

Should you use a synthetic sleeping bag or one filled with down when winter backpacking? That depends on the weather. A down bag will be lighter and warmer generally, but not if it gets wet. If there is a chance that you’ll be getting wet, a synthetic fill is better. Here are a couple more tips.

1. Pack fatty foods. Fat produces heat as it is digested, so bring foods high in fat for additional warmth as well as more calories for the weight. These can include peanut butter, corn chips, and nuts.

2. Have enough dry socks. Feet get wet from the snow when you use non-waterproof boots, and wet from your own sweat when the boots are waterproof. Make sure you have dry socks to change into for sleeping and for each day.
